You Know What It Never Was? That Serious or It Was Never That Serious is a viral TikTok audio and video used by TikTokers in lip-dub videos to express, both genuinely and ironically, how something seemingly stressful ended up being "not that serious." The video containing the audio was uploaded to TikTok in November 2022 and went viral over the following months. In January 2023, Stranger Things actor Noah Schnapp notably used the audio to come out as gay.

Origin

On November 7th, 2022, TikToker[1] @princessazula0 posted a video where she says, "You know what it never was? That serious. It was never that serious. Quite frankly, will never be that serious." The video gained over 860,000 views in two months (shown below).

Spread

The original sound[2] for @princessazula0's video became popularized over the following months, inspiring over 55,000 uses by early January 2023. The audio is most often used in ironic and genuine lip-dub videos about things being less serious than they may have seemed (prominent examples from December 2022 shown below).

Noah Schnapp's Coming Out Video

On January 6th, 2022, Stranger Things actor Noah Schnapp posted a coming-out video to TikTok,[3] lip dubbing to the audio under the caption, "When I finally told my friends and family I was gay after being scared in the closet for 18 years and all they said was 'we know,'" garnering over 69 million views in four days. His coming-out video, which poked fun at himself following viral speculation about his character's orientation, proceeded to gain viral spread online and widespread media attention shortly after.[4]
