About

You Know the Butcher? or This Whole Concert Is a Trap is a series of copypasta memes based on a scene from the 2024 M. Night Shyamalan film Trap using the phrasal template, "You know X? The frickin nut job that goes around just Y? Well they set up a trap for them. This whole Z is a trap." The meme was first seen online as early as April 2024 and was popularized on X / Twitter in early August 2024 following the release of the movie.

Origin

At the 01:15 mark of the first trailer for M. Night Shyamalan's film Trap, released on April 18th, 2024, Jonathan Langdon, playing Jamie, tells Josh Hartnett, playing Cooper, that the concert which he and his daughter are attending has been set up as a trap to catch the serial killer known as the Butcher (shown below). Jamie says:

"You know the Butcher? That freaking nutjob that goes around just chopping people up? Well, the feds or whatever heard that he's gonna be here today, so they set up a trap for him. This whole concert — it's a trap."

On April 19th, X[1] user @sternbergh posted a screenshot of Jamie from the trailer along with a parody of his dialogue from the scene referencing Taylor Swift's album The Tortured Poets Department, garnering over 2,100 likes in four months (shown below). This is the earliest known instance of the meme.

Spread

The meme gained viral spread across X over the following months, seeing a notable increase in use in early August 2024, following the August 2nd release of the film.

For example, on August 3rd, 2024, X[2] user @roryofffilm posted a version of the meme about Dracula, garnering over 13,000 likes in three days (shown below, left). On the same day, X[3] user @ScottMendelson posted one about Harry Potter that gained over 3,400 likes in the same span of time (shown below, right).

On August 4th, X[4] user @SiddhantAdlakha posted a version of the meme about the Jeremy Renner app, garnering over 4,800 likes in two days (shown below). On August 5th, Uproxx[5] published an article about the popularity of the meme.
