Origin

The quote comes from an interview with Katy Perry on a 2014 episode of The Project, as she explains sharing negative emotions. The interview was uploaded to YouTube on November 10th, 2014 by user Alex Hill (shown below). As of January 2021, the original interview has over 1.1 million views on YouTube.

You know, you walk out the door. You see someone that you know, and they ask you how you are, and you just have to say that you're fine, when you're not really fine, but you just can't get into it because they would never understand.

The quote became popularly used in "fail" clips on Vine and YouTube in 2016. On September 25th, YouTuber Kauntix uploaded a Vine compilation of memes using the quote, gaining over 1.4 million views (shown below, left). On November 12th, 2016, YouTuber Mitchell Westphall posted a compilation of Vines featuring the quote, gaining over 150,000 views (shown below, right).

The meme evolved to appear in different contexts. For example, on January 31st, 2017, YouTuber Kadz used the meme in a Replacement Remix of Let It Grow, gaining over 1.2 million views (shown below, left). On August 22nd, 2020, YouTuber PineBlox posted a video using the line in a scene from Peppa Pig, gaining over 20,000 views (shown below, right).
