About

"You Guys Are Getting Paid?" is a line spoken by Will Poulter's character Kenny Rossmore in the 2013 American comedy film We're the Millers. Starting around early 2019, the scene became an image macro and object-labeling meme format used to display surprise at another's previously unknown monetary income.

Origin

On August 3rd, 2013, We're the Millers[1] premiered in theaters in the United States. In one particular scene (shown below), members of the titular "family" (or rather, drug smugglers posing as one) accuse protagonist David Clark (played by Jason Sudeikis) of splitting the reward money unevenly among the "family," to which Kenny (played by Will Poulter) responds with "You guys are getting paid?", comedically unaware that the other members were receiving payment.[2]

Spread

On January 7th, 2019, Redditor /u/ibarklikeashark submitted the first known iteration to r/dankmemes (shown below, left), referencing the mobile game Mafia City.[3] A January 10th post on the subreddit by TheGamerCant[4] gained over 41,000 points (shown below, right).

User JJ_Rawiri also posted a meme about how Reddit users aren't paid that day, gaining over 85,000 points[5] (shown below, left). Over time, the template expanded to other social media sites. For example, a variation was posted on May 30th, 2019 by Twitter user @PTSDGuts,[6] gaining over 310 retweets and 1,300 likes (shown below, right).
