You Gotta Be Fucking Lying, also known as Hell Naw, is a viral catchphrase and sound popularized on TikTok in late 2022. Creators typically use the sound to depict the distress their younger selves felt about things that feel less significant now. This includes fears of the Bermuda Triangle, quicksand and various political elections.
Origin
On September 21st, 2020, TikToker[1] @mk_slattt posted a video of a skit where he pretended to be distressed at having lost his gun at "Shmarcus Yarnell's" house. He delivers the lines, "You gotta be fucking' lyin', boy hell naw god hell naw." The post gathered over 600,000 plays and 99,000 likes in nearly two years (seen below).
Spread
On October 19th, 2022, TikToker[2] @biglv2x posted a video using the sound, gathering over 900,000 views and 300,000 likes in nearly a month (seen below, left). On October 20th, TikToker[3] @_ktr14 posted a video using the sound as well, gathering over 400,000 plays and 120,000 likes in nearly a month (seen below, right).
On October 22nd, TikToker[4] @sirlvvv posted the earliest known video following the most prevalent meme format using the sound, with a text overlay that read, "me in 5th grade when Trump won and I thought I was getting sent back to Africa." The post gathered over 1 million plays and 300,000 likes in three weeks (seen below, left). On October 24th, TikToker[5] @trellyconnor posted a similar video, gathering over 2 million plays and 600,000 likes in three weeks (seen below, right).
