You Got the Dud refers to a memorable line from the animated TV sitcom The Simpsons. In the show, the Simpson family and their son's friend Milhouse play the board game Mystery Date, when they notice that one of the game's characters, "the dud," looks like Milhouse. Once they realize it, Marge Simpson says, "You got the dud." Online, the moment has been the inspiration of remixes and images.

Origin

On May 19th, 1996, the Fox[1] television network aired the season finale of season seven (episode 25) of The Simpsons entitled "Summer of 4 Ft. 2." In the episode, the Simpson family goes on a summer vacation to a beach house. One night they decide to play the board game "Mystery Date," a dating simulation in which players pick cards of men that they will go on a date with (video below). At one point, Bart pulls "the Dud," a character who looks suspiciously like Milhouse. Marge and Homer laugh as Marge says, "You got the dud."


Spread

While the line has long-been a fan favorite, "You Got the Dud" became a popular quote and screenshot on Simpsons fan blogs beginning in the early 2010s. On July 21st, 2011, the blog Simpsons Screen Shots[2] posted a series of images (shown below, left) from the episode with the caption "You Got the Dud."

Later that year, on October 27th, the Tumblr Mmm…The Simpsons[3] posted a series of "You got the dud" screenshots." This post (shown below, center) features screenshots of the whole scene and received more than 70 notes in six years. Eight months later, on June 5th, 2012, Tumblr[4] user abloodymess posted a screen shot of part holding up the "dud" with the caption "Hah! You got the dud." The post (shown below, right) received more than 80 notes.

Over the next few years, "You got the dud" became a popular catchphrase on Reddit. On March 1st, 2013, Redditor DerkaDerksen posted a screen shot of the scene on /r/TheSimpsons[5] subreddit in the thread "Hey! He looks just like you, poindexter!" The post received more than 500 points (97% upvoted) as of July 2017. Numerous other Reddit threads in the /r/TheSimpsons subreddit.[6][7][8]

On February 15th, 2015, a screenshot of the "dud" was uploaded to Imgur.[9] The image (shown below) received more than 15,000 views in two years.


That year, a video of the whole scene appeared on YouTube.[10] Uploaded by lilkiedis07, the video received more than 25,000 views in two years.

On July 17th, 2017, YouTuber Rocketto Man posted a remix of the moment, which combines the original scene and places it in other contexts, on YouTube.[11] Within a week, the video received more than 12,000 views.
