"You Fell Victim to One of the Classic Blunders" is a memorable quote uttered by the character Vizzini (played by Wallace Shawn) in the 1987 fantasy comedy film The Princess Bride. Online, a screen-capture from the scene has been used in image macros featuring the quote as a punchline to various jokes about one's mistake.

Origin

On September 25th, 1987, the film The Princess Bride was released in theaters in the United States. In the film, the character Vizzini challenges the protagonist Westley (played by Carey Elwes) to a battle of wits. After confidently and prematurely announcing himself the winner, Vizzini tells Westley, "You fell victim to one of the classic blunders" (shown below).[1][2]



On September 25th, 2012, Tumblr [3] user tickatocka posted a gifset from the scene (shown below). Within five years, the set has received more than 187,000 notes.

Over the next few months, The gifset and gifs have been shared on Imgur [4] and as a reaction image on FunnyJunk. [5]

On December 10th, 2013, an anonymous 4chan [7] user posted a screenshot of the moment with the caption "classic blunder, OP. Never post an image erotic than your topic" (shown below).



On February 14th, 2018, Redditor [6] Lopt_the_Sly posted the moment as an image macro on the /r/dankmemes subreddit, captioned by the text "When you tell her, 'I do', but you are crossing your fingers behind your back." The post (shown below, left) received more than 2,800 points (98% upvotes) and 20 comments.

Over the next 24 hours, more Redditors on the /r/dankmemes subreddit posted more variations of the image macro (shown below, center and right)
