About
You Didn't Need To Post That refers to a viral dub of a Cowboy Bebop scene by Gianni Matragano in which he alters the dialogue to make it appear as though the character Spike Siegel is asking Faye Valentine why she "posted" something. The video and stills from it have been used as reaction replies beneath various hot takes and unpopular posts, particularly on Twitter.
Origin
On April 6th, 2020, Gianni Matragano posted a dub of a Cowboy Bebop scene, altering the dialogue so it appears as though Spike Siegel is asking Faye Valentine why she posted something. The video gained over 2.6 million views in three years (shown below).
Hey, listen. You didn't need to post that. Why? Why did you post it? It's too late now to delete it. Now we just have to live with it.
Spread
The clip quickly became a reaction video format on Twitter, used primarily to respond to hot takes and unpopular opinions on the platform. For example, on July 14th, 2020, the clip was posted by Twitter user @vidfindr (shown below, top). On June 28th, 2021, Twitter user @burnerbylaw used it to reply to a tweet from @sairasameerarao, gaining over 13,000 views in roughly two years (shown below, bottom).
Others on the site began using GIFs and stills from the scene to imply that they were not fans of the tweets they were replying to. For example, on October 18th, 2022, Twitter user @soydel2001[1] used a still from the scene to criticize a person who posted art of Sonic the Hedgehog without his shoes on (shown below, left). On March 3rd, 2022, user @zanebible2[2] posted a GIF from the scene in response to a user who implied Joe Biden was having an affair with Nancy Pelosi (shown below, right).
