About

"You Changed" Bro is a phrasal template, which spread on Twitter in August 2020, and expresses an absurd or sincere defense against accusations of a value change. Not to be confused with "You've Changed, Bro", a colloquialism expressing disappointment over new values shared by a loved one.

Origin

The phrase "You've Changed, Bro" existed before its usage in the meme. In common speech, people use the phrase to state their shock and disappointment over a change in a friend's values. People used the phrase in online conversation, as well.[1]

On August 5th, 2020, two tweets show people using the expression as a defense. Twitter user @4thlxrd tweeted,[9] "'You changed bro' yeah nigga i went to morgan. was good dummy." The tweet received more than 150 likes and 50 retweets in less than two weeks (shown below, left). Twitter[10] user @fuckpillar shared one that reads, "'you changed' bro I don't even like you." The tweet received more than 1,000 likes and 315 retweets in less than two weeks (shown below, right).

Spread

On August 10th, Twitter[11] user @sunfIowerfike tweeted, 'you changed' bro I joined stan twitter." The tweet received more than 157,000 likes and 28,000 retweets in less than one week (shown below).

Three days later, the phrase spread on Twitter. On August 12th, Twitter[3] user @CATR4D0R4. They wrote, "'you've changed' bro i was hanging in the bathroom at the biggest party of the fall i could stay right here or disappear and nobody'd even notice at all im a creeper in the bathroom cuz my buddy kinda left me alone but id rather fake pee than stand awkwardly or pretend to check a" (shown below, left).

That day, Twitter[4] user willsroland tweeted, "'you've changed' yeah bro i’m sick of being the loser the geek or whatever." The tweet received more than 150 likes and 50 retweets in less than one week (shown below, right).

Later that day, Twitter[5] user @blodedvibes' tweet spread the template further. Their tweet, which reads, "'you've changed' bro i’ve been crying to frank ocean leave me alone." The tweet received more than 11,000 likes and 2,900 retweets in less than one week (shown below).

Within days, the phrase went viral on Twitter. On August 13th, Twitter[6] user @kimntuituon tweeted, "'you changed' bro i healed my codependency issues from my childhood trauma." The tweet received more than 47,000 likes and 10,000 retweets in less than one week (shown below, left). The next day, a parody account based on the haunted doll Annabelle tweeted,[7] "you changed" bro I finally escaped." The tweet received more than 177,000 likes and 33,000 retweets in less than one week (shown below, right).

On August 14th, 2020, The Daily Dot [8] published an article on the meme.
