You Can Love a Character and Still Admit When They're Wrong is a copypasta consisting of a paragraph about acknowledging that a character you love is flawed and imperfect, interjected throughout with parenthetical, contrasting claims that the character is perfect. The copypasta was first used on X / Twitter as early as November 7th, 2022, and became increasingly popularized over the following years, spreading to sites including Reddit, Facebook and iFunny.

Origin

On November 6th, 2022, Redditor u/Cold_Breadfruit_9794 posted a screenshot to the /r/SuccessionTV[1] subreddit of a seemingly deleted X post by user @gerrialert sharing an image of the character Gerri Kellman (J. Smith-Cameron) from Succession, writing, "you can love a character and still admit when they're wrong I love gerri kellman but I acknowledge her flaws (none she is perfect) and can hold her accountable for her wrongdoings (she never did anything wrong in her life) and call her out on her actions (which are always right)," garnering over 1,400 upvotes in three years. This is the earliest known post sharing the copypasta.

The meme spread over the following years, resulting in numerous viral posts on sites like Reddit, X and Facebook.

On November 9th, 2022, a version of the meme about the character Scaramouche was posted to the /r/ScaramoucheMains[2] subreddit, garnering over 1,100 upvotes in three years.

On February 14th, 2024, iFunny[3] user CaDaddy posted a version of the meme featuring an image of Kikuri from Bocchi the Rock! drinking, garnering over 4,200 smiles in a year.



On February 23rd, 2025, X[4] user @kagurabachi posted a version of the meme about Nikki from Infinity Nikki, garnering over 12,000 likes in seven months.



On April 25th, the Arcane: League Of Legends Netflix Series Facebook[5] page posted a version of the meme about Vi from Arcane, garnering over 3,100 reactions in five months.

On May 3rd, X[6] user @thisredwine posted a version about Annie (Wunmi Mosaku) from the film Sinners that gained over 32,000 likes in four months.



On September 22nd, 2025, the official @SEGA X[7] page posted a version of the meme about Shadow from Sonic the Hedgehog, garnering over 27,000 likes in a day.
