"You Break The Rules And Become The Hero," continued "That Doesn't Seem Fair," refers to a quote and exploitable image macro taken from the February 2022 trailer for the Marvel film Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. After it was uploaded to YouTube, a scene from it featuring Dr. Strange and Wanda Maximoff, aka the Scarlet Witch, garnered attention, where Wanda says, "You break the rules and become the hero. I do it and I become the enemy. That doesn't seem fair." Typically, memes using the format start with a basic setup of something controversial for one group or thing but not another, often involving common double standards.

Origin

On February 13th, 2022, the trailer for Marvel Studios' 2022 film Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was posted to YouTube, where over the course of four days, it received roughly 35.7 million views (shown below). At the 1:46 timestamp, Wanda is quoted saying, "You break the rules … and become the hero. I do it and I become the enemy. That doesn't seem fair," which is where the meme template stems from.

The first meme creator to reference the quote was Facebook^[1] user Sandro Badridze on February 13th within the Marvel: Multiverse of Shitposting group. Their meme (shown below, left) received roughly 1,800 reactions over the course of four days. On the same day, Facebook^[2] user Tai Colodny also posted a meme in the Marvel: Multiverse of Shitposting Facebook group, using the three-panel version of the template that would be exploited en masse. The meme (shown below, right) earned roughly 6,800 reactions over the course of four days.

Multiple versions of the meme were then posted in the Marvel: Multiverse of Shitposting Facebook group going into the rest of February 2022. For instance, Facebook^[3] user Jodi-Leigh Barrett posted an iteration on February 13th, earning over 700 reactions in four days (shown below, left). On February 15th, a blank template was posted to /r/MemeTenplatesOfficial,^[4] earning over 155 upvotes. The next day, an iteration was shared by Redditor HTJ_Starboy to /r/Memes,^[5] earning roughly 16,600 upvotes in one day (shown below, right).

The template received attention on Instagram too within Indian meme circles. For instance, on February 14th, Instagram^[6] page memechatapp posted a version that received roughly 2,300 likes in three days (shown below, left). On February 15th, Redditor theBrownKnight69 posted a version to /r/dankmemes,^[7] earning roughly 17,200 upvotes over the course of one day (shown below, right).
