About
"YO-KAI Disco" is an audio track from the Japanese shoot-'em-up game Mamorukun Curse! (Japanese: まもるクンは呪われてしまった!), developed by G.rev and Gulti.[1] Since 2013, the song has become a popular source for MAD videos and YouTube Poop Music Videos (YTPMVs) on YouTube and Niconico.
Origin
Mamorukun Curse! was first released in Japanese arcades in 2008, and later ported to the Xbox 360 in 2009 and the PlayStation 3 in 2011. The game was also localized and released in North America in July 2013. "YO-KAI Disco" was composed as the background music for the stage "Entrance to the Netherworld" by Japanese composer Yousuke Yasui.[2] This electro-pop tune, featuring nostalgic, retro-sounding synths, is recognized as the game's signature track.
Spread
The earliest examples of MAD videos using this song appeared on Niconico in 2010, featuring content from A Certain Scientific Railgun[3] and El Shaddai.[4] However, the video that significantly boosted the song’s popularity was "HAPPY Disco," a parody featuring Ryuho Okawa[5], the founder of the Japanese new religious group Happy Science[6], known for his passionate speeches and bizarre "interviews" with guardian spirits. The original upload in January 2012[7] was quickly taken down due to copyright infringement, but a reupload in December of the same year (shown below) gained widespread popularity on Niconico and attracted many followers.[8] As a result, MAD videos posted in subsequent years generally use the sped-up version of the song, following the style established by this parody.
Additionally, "YO-KAI Disco" has occasionally been used in YTPMVs on YouTube since mid-2013.[9]
Feedback to The Official
On June 15th, 2025, Japanese video game publisher City Connection released the official music video for "YO-KAI Disco" to coincide with the announcement of Mamorukun ReCurse!, a newly ported version of the original game set for release that September. On the 17th, Japanese online video game news outlet Game*Spark reported that the music video attracted attention for its MAD/YTPMV-inspired style, as its creators--Takeshi Nomura, Minazuki, and Kagerio--are well-known MAD video producers on both YouTube and Niconico.[10]
