Yo, Angelo refers to a memorable scene of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure anime series in which characters Josuke Higashikata greets a statue confining minor antagonist Anjuro Katagiri. Starting in April 2019, the scene gained significant popularity within the anime fandom and has been referenced in memes and used as an exploitable.

Origin

On July 5th, 1992, chapter 274 "The Nijimura Brothers, Part 1" of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure manga was published.^[1] In one part of the chapter, characters Josuke Higashikata and Koichi Hirose are walking past a statue confining previously defeated minor antagonist Anjuro "Angelo" Katagiri inside. Josuke proceeds to greet the statue by saying "Yo, Angelo."

On April 15th, 2016, episode three "The Nijimura Brothers, Part 1" of part four of the anime adaptation of the series premiered.^[2] In the episode, the scene is shown.

Spread

On April 15th, 2016, Tumblr user skyhigh-420 posted an If You See This Image While Scrolling meme referencing the scene (shown below).^[3] The post gained over 2,100 likes and reblogs in three years.

In the following years, the scene saw more references on Tumblr^[4] and on Reddit in /r/ShitpostCrusaders subreddit.^[5]

Starting in April 2019, the meme saw a surge in popularity in /r/ShitpostCrusaders community following a number of popular posts. The earliest known notable submission during that period was made by user enrico_gucci on April 18th, 2019 (shown below, left).^[6] During the same period, Moyai Emoji 🗿 started to become associated with the meme.^[7]

In the following months, multiple memes both referencing the scene and utilizing it as an exploitable appeared in /r/ShitpostCrusaders subreddit.
