On February 5th, 2020, Universal Pictures UK published the trailer for Minions 2: The Rise of Gru on YouTube. In the trailer, a character asks Gru (voiced by Steve Carrell) if he can be a supervillain. He responds, "Yes, I am pretty despicable." The post received more than 3.9 million views in less than one month (shown below).^[1]

Two days later, on February 7th, 2020 Redditor Pionix155 posted one of the earliest known usages of the meme. The post received more than 38,000 points (95% upvoted) and 250 comments in less than three weeks (shown below).

Over the next few weeks, the meme continued to appear on various subreddits. For example, on February 8th, Redditor^[3] PEARP1MPLES posted a variation with the caption "Me when I tell the wrong answer in kahoot and 18 people fall for it." The post received more than 53,000 points (95% upvoted) and 120 comments in less than three weeks (shown below, left).
