The exploitable image became the subject of memes, jokes and Photoshop edits in August 2024 on X / Twitter, Instagram and Reddit, most often mocking the horse's design and ugliness.

Origin

On August 13th, 2024, the X[1] page @_filmcrave posted a new promotional image for the upcoming romance movie We Live in Time, featuring Florence Pugh and Andrew Garfield. The picture shows the happy couple on a carousel ride and next to them is the figure of a bright yellow carousel horse with a funny-looking face. The tweet (seen below) amassed over 42 million views and 20,000 likes in two days.

The carousel horse's ugly appearance quickly caught netizens' attention, becoming a viral topic and the subject of jokes and memes.

For example, on August 13th, 2024, X[2] user @xoxoxiimena replied (seen below, left) to @_filmcrave's tweet, writing "I'm sorry that horse is ugly af😭," which amassed more than 438,000 likes and 36,000 reposts in two days. On August 14th, X[3] user @tylerduran21 replaced the ugly horse for the SpongeBob SquarePants seahorse (seen below, right), which amassed roughly 560 likes and 10 reposts in a day.

Numerous posts on Reddit about the humorous-looking horse also appeared in mid-August 2024 as it continued spreading online.[4][5] For example, a post to the /r/Fauxmoi[6] subreddit on August 14th about the yellow horse received over 600 upvotes and 40 comments in 17 hours, with many Redditors sharing photoshops in the comments of it being added to other iconic movie scenes and memes (example seen below).

On September 8th, 2024, Florence Pugh and Andrew Garfield commented about the 'We Live In Time' horse meme during an interview for the Associated Press[7]. The video (seen below) amassed more than 52,000 views and 953 likes in three days.
