Origin

On June 1st, 2018, Kanye West released his eighth studio album, Ye.[1] The day prior, he held a listening party for his new album, Ye, in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Kim Kardashian confirmed in a tweet that West took the photo for the album cover on the way to the listening party.[2] It is a photo of mountains with the words "I hate being bi-polar it's awesome" written on it (shown below).

Spread

Shortly after the album cover was released, Twitter users parodied the cover by photoshopping their own text onto the photograph West took. West tweeted a generator[3] for the parodies on June 2nd, leading to myriad parodies. For example, user @ClintFromOhio tweeted a photoshopped edit that put the cowboy from the Big Enough meme, gaining over 970 retweets and 3,500 likes (shown below, left). User @VILLAin4417 posted a GDPR meme with the cover, gaining over 1,100 retweets and 5,200 likes (shown below, right).

Other notable edits include one by user @sewerlove which paired the cover text with an image of a Minion (shown below, left). Another by user @carolinef0ley used the template to create a Loss edit (shown below, right). The parodies were covered by Twitter Moments,[4] Mashable,[5] and Indy100.[6]
