Yapper x Listener is a ship dynamic meme in which one person is labeled a "yapper," meaning someone who talks a lot and another person is labeled a "listener," meaning they are happy listening to the other person yap. Memes about the yapper and the listener dynamic first started appearing online as early as November 2023 on TikTok and became increasingly popularized throughout 2024 across social media. In March 2024, a related redraw template in which characters are labeled "judger, listener, yapper" went viral on X.

Origin

On November 25th, 2023, TikToker^[1] @saskia.orm posted a video captioned, "the yapper girlfriend and the listener boyfriend," in which she uses an audio from the show Chowder to represent herself as a yapper, garnering over 700,000 views in nine months. This is the earliest known meme about the yapper x listener dynamic.

Memes about the yapper x listener dynamic became increasingly popular throughout 2024 across multiple social media platforms.

On March 3rd, 2024, X^[2] user @thalassashells posted a drawing of three characters, one labeled "judger," one "listener" and one "yapper," garnering over 9,600 likes in five months. The post inspired numerous redraws replacing the characters with recognizable characters from a variety of fandoms.

On March 23rd, X^[3] user @northstardoll posted a meme depicting two characters drinking coffee at a table, captioned, "real yapper to real listener communication," garnering over 123,000 likes in five months.

On July 16th, 2024, TikToker^[4] @choco_catt00 posted a meme depicting a yapper x listener dynamic, garnering over 1.3 million views in a month. The original sound for the video, which consists of the song "Ringside" from Rhythm Heaven, was used over 20,000 times in that same period of time, with many of the top examples being further memes depicting a yapper and a listener.

On August 19th, X^[5] user @Ale_7l3 posted an animation in which one character yaps and the other stands around listening, captioning the post, "yapper & listener," garnering over 7,500 likes in two weeks.

On August 24th, 2024, TikToker^[6] @il0v3myb3stfri3nds posted a video using the "yapper x listener" original sound depicting the ship dynamic using a calculator, garnering over 2.1 million views in six days.
