Y'all Consider This A Date? refers to a series of jokes popular on Black Twitter that grew popular in early June of 2017 in which a person posts an amusing image and asks if the image qualifies as a romantic outing.

Origin

On May 28th, 2017, @TheVibeControl posted a video of a couple hanging out and making music together with the caption "Y'all consider this a date?" The tweet gained over 34,000 retweets and 103,000 likes (shown below). Prior to this post, the phrase had been used in some Instagram posts in which a person sincerely asks if the image in the post constitutes a date.


Spread

Following @TheVibeControl's tweet, people began making parodies in which an amusing situation or image would be paired with the caption. On the 30th, Twitter user @OldManRoland_[1] posted a link to an article about two camels stopping traffic by mating in the road with the caption, gaining over 39,600 retweets and 85,900 likes (shown below, left). On the 29th, user @iswearididntask[2] posted an image of two iguanas who appear to be hugging with the caption, gaining over 15,000 retweets and 36,000 likes.


In the following week, the jokes began to attract media attention. On June 2nd, Smosh[3] posted a compilation of some of the most popular tweets. Bossip[4] did the same on the 5th. The meme remained popular through the following week. On the 12th, Twitter user @desusnice[5] posted an infamous image of Alex Jones and Megyn Kelly in a car with the caption, gaining over 470 retweets and 1,700 likes in a day (shown below, left). @limitedheatt[6] posted the joke following the David West/Tristan Thompson Kiss in Game 5 of the NBA Finals, gaining over 250 retweets (shown below, right).
