About

Xiaopang the Chinese Dog, also known as Xiao Pang, 小胖 or Xiǎopàng, refers to an orange-colored Chinese dog named Xiaopang who's viral on TikTok and Instagram. Xiaopang and his owner are known for skit videos in which the owner snitches on him by giving him food and then exclaiming that Xiaopang stole the food. Notable examples center on roast duck, like the Xiaopang, Do You Like Roast Duck? video. Xiaopang often bears his teeth and growls by the end of each video. Discourse spread about Xiaopang possibly being in distress. However, it was revealed that Xiaopang was trained to growl. Xiaopang memes and videos gained cross-platform spread on Twitter / X in mid-2024. Many Xiaopang memes centered on roast duck and the hilarity mixed with the wholesomeness of the animal's online presence. The Instagram and TikTok accounts sharing Xiaopang videos, such as @xiaopang456 and @xiaopang174, were not original accounts. In actuality, Xiaopang's owner posted videos to Douyin (China's TikTok alternative). In Chinese, "xiǎopàng" translates to "chubby."

Origin

Xiaopang the Chinese Dog comes from the Douyin[1] account 请叫我小胖 which has over 525,000 followers on the Chinese app. Xiaopang and his owner live in the Shandong province. In English, Xiaopang is named Chubby or Little Fatty because "xiǎopàng" translates to "chubby" and "xiǎo pàng" translates to "little fatty." By August 16th, 2024, Xiaopang's Douyin account had amassed over 11 million likes across 238 videos.

Videos of Xiaopang from Douyin were reposted outside of the Chinese internet on TikTok[2] starting in July 2023. However, viral reposts didn't surface on the Western web until mid-2024. Currently, the first-known viral repost of a Xiaopang video was shared by TikToker[3] @jiugecoca on April 30th, 2024, gaining over 11.7 million plays and 805,500 likes in four months (shown below).

Spread

Going into mid-2024, repost accounts of Xiaopang videos became increasingly common and viral. For instance, on May 31st, 2024, Instagram[4] user @xiaopang174 posted an Instagram Reel that received over 1.7 million views and 100,200 likes in three months. The account shared more viral Reels[5][6] with Xiaopang in the following months, amassing over 328,000 followers in three months.

TikToker[6] @xiaopang456 and TikToker[7] @jiugecoca, among others on the site, also went viral in mid-2024 (examples shown below).

On Twitter / X

As Xiaopang videos went viral on Instagram and TikTok in mid-2024, discourse and memes about the dog then spread to X. For instance, on July 12th, 2024, X[10] user @OsaKuPhD tweeted, "Anybody rocking with the Chinese dog Xiaopang?" Then, X[11] user @OsaKuPhD quoted his own post with a Xiaopang video, gaining over 56,000 likes in a month (shown below).

On August 14th, 2024, X[9] user @OfficialBrohoss tweeted the Xiaopang, Do You Like Roast Duck? video, captioning it, "I love the chinese dog that gets snitched on. get owned, buddy," amassing over 137,000 likes in two days (shown below).

The tweet inspired a slew of memes about Xiaopang in the following days. For instance, on August 15th, X[12] user @AliceClimbers tweeted a "Free Xiaopang School Walk Out" poster, amassing over 51,000 likes in a day (shown below, left).

Also on August 15th, 2024, X[13] user @jun3buggy tweeted a Xiaopang meme that followed the Ima Keep It Real With U Chief format, gaining over 32,000 likes in a day (shown below, right).

Distress Discourse

On August 14th, 2024, X[14] user @KaliYuga3034 replied to @OfficialBrohoss's post, saying that Xiaopang's expressions revealed that he was in distress. On August 15th, X[15] user @arrrrrrrrrrrca replied to the allegation with evidence that Xiaopang's owner had trained him to growl and show his teeth, ultimately revealing that Xiaopang was not in distress (shown below). Many X[16] users then joked about Xiaopang being a good actor.
