X Has Become Catholic refers to a series of memes showing a person or character next to a cross and the caption, "X has become catholic," "X" being the character. The original meme, showing Naruto character Sasuke with his hands folded, was posted to Tumblr in 2013. The format spread across social media over the following years.

Origin

On May 19th, 2013, Tumblr[1] user kiba-kuntold posted a meme showing Sasuke with his hands folded next to a blue cross and the text, "Sasuke has become catholic," gaining over 43,900 notes in nine years (shown below).

Spread

The format spread over the following years as people replaced the character in the meme. On April 9th, 2020, Tumblr[2] user helloitsbees posted a version of the meme referencing the band Gorillaz, gaining over 5,100 notes in two years (shown below).

On June 29th, Tumblr[3] user cooper-blogs posted a version of the meme referencing Animal Crossing, gaining over 17,600 notes in two years (shown below, left). On January 27th, 2021, Tumblr[4] user loathsome posted an image of a termite mound that looks like a church using the format, gaining over 36,000 notes in a year (shown below, right).

On August 21st, 2021, Twitter[5] user @JermSansContext posted a version of the meme using an image of streamer Jerma985, gaining over 10,000 likes in 10 months.

On May 9th, 2022, Tumblr[6] user pherre posted a version of the meme using the character Jonathan Harker from Dracula in relation to the Dracula Daily newsletter, gaining over 3,000 notes in a month (shown below).
