Wypipo

Wypipo is a slang term used to describe white people whose actions come to be mocked or criticized as being indicative of white culture and white privilege. The term is a partial phonetic spelling of "white people" in African American vernacular and primarily used in writing.

Origin

Thought likely used prior to its first online appearance, the earliest known usage of the word "wypipo" was posted by Twitter ^[1] user @DVSblast on October 18th, 2012. The user, responding to a tweet by television host The Kid Mero, about a white woman who breastfeeds her dog, said, "SHOUT OUT TO THE FREAK GOD WYPIPO" (shown below).

Since that post, the term has become a frequently used on Twitter, with people using the term to describe interactions that they have had with white people, particularly in regards to racism and ignorance of people of color.^[2]

On January 29th, 2016, Urban Dictionary ^[3] user yomamahakim defined the term as "Twitter slang or dialect that with read aloud sounds like 'white people' which is its actual meaning." The post received more than 3,500 upvotes in three years (shown below).

Two years later, the term was defined on Wiktionary. ^[4]
