Origin

The earliest known post to use the game appeared on the Facebook page TryLife[1] on January 13th, 2017, as the page posted a still image of The Wizard of Oz and asked its followers to name the film giving only wrong answers. The post gained over 3,000 reactions and 9,200 shares (shown below).

Spread

The game saw some light spread over the following two years, appearing occasionally on social media. For example, a Facebook post by MovieClips on February 16th, 2017 replicated the game using a picture from Top Gun [2] (shown below, left). On July 9th, Twitter Kingdom Hearts account @Khsanctuary[3] tweeted the game asking "What does a Keyblade do?" (shown below, right).

The game became much more popular on Twitter in late June of 2019 when several posts inviting users to give incorrect responses to movie stills spread widely on the site. On June 20th, Twitter user @GothGirlVonDark[4] made the joke using a still from Freddy vs. Jason, gaining over 8,300 replies (shown below, left). On June 25th, user @jacobhunni[5] did the joke with The Lord of the Rings, gaining over 20,000 replies (shown below, right).

As the meme spread on Twitter, many users expressed intense dislike for it. For example, user @bobby[6] called it "the least funny shit i've ever seen in my life," gaining over 1,200 retweets and 15,000 likes (shown below, left). User @ch000ch[7] echoed the sentiment, gaining over 90 retweets and 990 likes. The meme was covered by Daily Dot[8] and Mashable.[9]
