Would You Date Him? refers to a series of exploitable image macros of clothes, personality traits and aesthetics that signify a certain type of e-boy that the viewer is questioned if they'd date. The template started on Instagram and Pinterest in March 2020 and began receiving ironic remixes in September 2021 on Twitter, Instagram and iFunny. The format shares similarities to the Starter Packs meme trend.
Origin
On March 25th, 2020, Instagram[1] account @boogzel_apparel used the earliest known example of the format in a post. The image (shown below) received roughly 26,000 likes over the course of one year. @boogzel_apparel[2] is an account for a clothing brand. They used the template multiple times[3][4] throughout the rest of 2020 as an ad campaign to sell clothes. Boogzel Apparel also posted the "Would You Date Him?" image to their Pinterest.[5]
Spread
In October 2020, @boogzel_apparel began tagging its personal account, @suhimess,[6] in its "Would You Date Him?" posts. On October 14th, 2020, @boogzel_apparel tagged @sushimess in a "Would You Date Him?" post.[7] The image (shown below, left) received roughly 16,000 likes over the course of one year. @sushimess began posting "Would You Date Him?" images to her personal account on January 5th, 2021. This first post[8] (shown below, right), received roughly 25,000 likes on over the course of nine months.
On September 12th, 2021, Twitter[9] user @Goopi_Kaur tweeted an image (shown below) using the "Would You Date Him?" template. The tweet received roughly 1,700 likes over the course of four days.
Other Twitter accounts on September 13th, 2021, then tweeted their own ironic versions of the template, such as Twitter[10] user @Julian_Epp, who received roughly 48,000 likes over three days for a version of the meme using the likeness of Nathan Fielder (shown below). The template soon spread to both iFunny[11] and Reddit[12] in the days following.
