Wort Wort Wort is a phrase used by The Elites in Halo which translates to "Go! Go! Go!" The sound effect was created by reversing the audio of human character Sergeant Johnson saying "Go, go, go!" It has been parodied by fans of the game in a variety of remixes and image macros.
Origin
In Halo: Combat Evolved, first released November 15th, 2001, the Elites species uses "Wort!" as a catchphrase synonymous with "Go!" (shown below, left). On February 12th, 2009, YouTuber The Satellite posted a video in which they discovered that the noise was made by reversing the audio of Sergeant Johnson saying "Go Go Go" (shown below, right).
Spread
The phrase was used in video remixes and parodied in image macros among Halo fans. On March 14th, 2012, Mast3rch13fII7 posted a remix of the "Sparta" song with the sound effect, gaining over 22,000 views (shown below, left). On March 14th, 2016, user Rob Contreras posted a parody set to Rihanna's "Work", gaining over 195,000 views (shown below, right).
On Reddit, "Wort" jokes are common among Halo fans. For example, on December 19th, 2017, Redditor cmbalke posted a Jaws parody poster in /r/Halo[1] gaining over 3,300 points (shown below, left). On July 16th, 2018, Redditor[2] Agent_Miami posted a fake text message using the phrase, gaining over 940 points (shown below, right). On December 17th, 2019, the meme was covered by StayHipp.[3]
