Worldwide Latina Belt

Worldwide Latina Belt is a catchphrase used to describe the notion that people along the equator are considered by some as honorary Latinas. The phrase, along with a diagram showing where this global belt lies, was first posted to Twitter by user @protestantwind in November 2020. The phrase has since become popularized on TikTok and internet culture in general.

Origin

On November 10th, 2020, Twitter^[1] user @protestantwind posted a tweet that read, "worldwide latina belt / all people from these places are latinas." The tweet gathered over 6,000 likes in two years (seen below).

Spread

On December 30th, 2020, TikToker @neniphone posted a video using the aforementioned tweet and a sound that said, "I didn't ask to be born Latina." The video gathered an unknown number of likes and views before being removed and can be accessed via a stitch by TikToker^[4] @shaancantmakenaan (seen below).

On February 28th, 2022, TikToker^[2] @htmljones posted their own version of the Worldwide Latina Belt, gathering over 400,000 plays and 70,000 likes in a year (seen below, left). On March 1st, @htmljones responded to a comment from Mia Khalifa, ^[3] gathering over 18,000 views and 800 likes in a similar timeframe (seen below, right).

On October 22nd, 2022, Twitter^[5] user @contrarianbimbo posted the original tweet in reply to a post that read, "I'm ending this 'latina' debate once and for all: if the CIA has picked your 'president,' you're latina," gathering over 200 likes in four months (seen below).

On November 30th, 2022, Twitter^[6] user @Nimalo_Nisanto posted a tweet ranking member nations of the Worldwide Latina Belt by vibes, gathering over 4,000 likes in three months (seen below).
