About

WordArt Image Macros refers to a style of image macro in which an image is overlaid with text taken from the Microsoft Word program WordArt to create a shitpost. The style originated on Weird Facebook pages before spreading to other social media sites.

Origin

While it's unclear where exactly WordArt Image Macros began, The Daily Dot[1] notes in an article on Weird Facebook that the style resembles Big Dog teeshirt parodies which were posted on the Something Awful forums in the mid-2000s (example shown below).

Early posters of the style on Weird Facebook include pages 'Not Only Do We,' 'I play KORN to my DMT plants, smoke blunts all day & do sex stuff’ and now-defunct pages 'Gangster Popeye' and 'Cabbage Cat.' These began appearing in the mid-2010s ('Gangster Popeye' example shown below).

Spread

The style soon spread to other Facebook pages and subreddits, particularly after Facebook censored 'Gangster Popeye' and 'Cabbage Cat' for posts in the style, which the administrators of 'Gangster Popeye' supposed was because of their image's satire against racism and white people.

On April 13th, 2016, the subreddit /r/THE_PACK[2] launched, wherein users post WordArt image macros. The subreddit has gained over 59,000 subscribers as of January 26th, 2018. Other communities based on the style include the Facebook pages 'LAZER BOYZ'[3] and 'Da Share Z0ne,'[4] and the Instagram account craigstwistedbrain.[5]
