Woman Showing Papers to Grey Cat is a two-panel image macro series featuring a photo of a woman holding a small stack of papers to a grey cat and a close-up picture of the cat. Many have used the images in a series of object-labeling memes about teaching.

Origin

On April 11th, 2019, Tumblr ^[1] user markv5 posted the earliest known usage of the image. The post received more than 765 notes in less than two years (shown below).

Spread

Later that year, on November 18th, 2019, BuzzFeed ^[2] included a since-deleted tweet featuring the image on a list of "22 Animal Tweets To Look At When You're Sad Or Happy Or Whenever, Really" (shown below, left).

That week, Redditor colombo1326 posted an object-labeling version of the meme on the /r/funny^[3] subreddit. The post received more than 12,000 points (96% upvoted) and 140 comments in less than one year (shown below, center).

The following year, on February 18th, 2020, Twitter^[4] user posted the images with the caption "Why does this cat look like he’s being shown the tweets that got him fired." The tweet received more than 36,000 likes and 6,400 retweets in less than one year (shown below, right).

On September 17th, 2020, Redditor Dragon_Skywalker posted a variation in the /r/dankmemes^[5] subreddit, where it received more than 81,000 points (94% upvoted) and 325 comments in less than two days (shown below).
