Witerally Hitting The Gwiddy or Witerwally Gwiddying is a baby-talk catchphrase associated with a trend on TikTok in which one person "hits the Griddy," often in an inappropriate location, while another off-camera says, "He's witterally hitting the gwiddy right now." The first video using the phrase was uploaded in April 2022 and it was popularized by a viral video posted to TikTok in early February 2023 in which a skier hits the Griddy while wearing skis, the camera operator saying, "she's hitting the gwiddy on the skis," resulting in parodies of the video.

Origin

On April 14th, 2022, TikToker^[8] @whosdiced posted a low-res video of Fortnite gameplay showing a character doing the Griddy while the player says, "Oh my God he's literally hitting the gwiddy right now," garnering over 1.8 million views in a year (shown below).

On January 14th, 2023, TikToker^[6] @jackson._.burrus posted a video where someone hits the Griddy on a frozen lake, the camera operator saying in baby talk, "buddy is literally gwiddying on the frozen lake," garnering over 4 million views in a month (shown below).

On February 2nd, TikToker^[1] @frankiesylz__ then posted a video in which she films a person hitting the Griddy while on skis, saying, "You guys I literally cannot make this up she's hitting the gwiddy on the skis, going down the ski hill doing the gwiddy," garnering over 7.4 million views in three weeks (shown below).

Spread

The catchphrase spread over the following weeks across TikTok. On February 4th, 2023, TikToker^[2] @mollyrrusso posted a video about how she's become obsessed with the phrase, garnering over 281,000 views in three weeks (shown below, left). On February 5th, TikToker^[3] @ayden.dunn5.0 posted a video showing someone "hitting the gwiddy" on a frozen lake, garnering over 3.6 million views in the same rough span of time (shown below, right). On February 11th, the @barstoolsports TikTok^[4] page reposted a now-deleted video recreating the original on skis, garnering over 4.7 million views in two weeks.

On February 18th, TikToker^[5] @ben_louie posted a video saying the phrase while someone hits the Griddy in the grocery store, garnering over 15 million views in four days (shown below). The phrase also spread to Twitter^[7] throughout the course of the month.
