Wiping Tears With A Hamster refers to multiple viral videos of people, mostly women, wiping their tears with pet hamsters, the first one being posted to Twitter in mid-2019. A TikTok of a girl wiping her tears with a hamster was also uploaded in early 2020 and received reactions and Duets where other TikTokers would wipe their tears with their pets.
Origin
On August 31st, 2019, Twitter[1] user slxump (since-deleted) posted a video of herself wiping her tears away with her pet hamster, captioning it, "i'm trying to unpuff my eyes cause i was crying last night." The tweet earned roughly 1,900 likes over the course of one month.
Although the tweet has since been deleted, the video was reposted to YouTube on October 21st, 2019, by the channel coochiesnorter9000, where, over the course of three years, it received roughly 66,600 views (shown below).
Spread
On September 1st, 2019, Twitter[2] user @_vicsimpson_ posted a quote retweet of slxump's video, saying, "no one: / me at 3am in the living room:" earning roughly 138,200 likes in three years. On September 2nd, 2019, Twitter[3] user daisymarquez_ quote retweeted the aforementioned QT, stating, "Did she just wipe her tears with a hamster lmao," earning roughly 376,100 likes in three years.
On January 27th, 2020, TikToker[4] anya_murphy posted a video of her wiping her tears with her hamster, earning roughly 13.4 million plays and 2.1 million likes in two years (shown below).
Inspired by anya_murphy's video, multiple TikTokers started posting Duets with her, either reacting to the viral video or recreating with their own hamsters or other pets. For instance, on January 28th, 2022, TikToker[5] aced_boi used the Staring Hamster in a Duet that received roughly 373,300 plays and 44,300 likes in two years (shown below, left). On January 29th, 2020, TikToker[6] urbaekay posted a video with her hamster, earning roughly 2 million plays and 230,800 likes in two years (shown below, right).
Other pets were used in subsequent videos using the same audio, like sugar gliders,[7] cats [8] and birds. [9]
Redraw Trend
In late 2021, a redraw trend emerged using the TikTok of anya_murphy as a reference. For instance, on October 19th, 2021, Twitter[10] user whatis0226 drew Hololive characters into the template, earning roughly 12,200 likes in seven months (shown below).
