About
Why Is Gamora? is a line said by the character Drax in the film Avengers: Infinity War. The line, evidently an ad-lib by actor Dave Bautista, became one of the more memorable lines of the film and was parodied online in several image macros.
Origin
In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the Guardians of the Galaxy character Drax is known for his brutish demeanor, which is undercut by his unfamiliarity with common idioms and slang played for comedic effect.[1] In Avengers: Infinity War, the characters Peter Quill and Tony Stark have a heated exchange in which Quill asks "Where is Gamora?" Stark responds, "I'll do you one better: Who is Gamora?" Drax interjects and says, "I'll do you one better: Why is Gamora?" (bootleg footage shown below).
Spread
The line was evidently ad-libbed by Drax actor Dave Bautista[1] and was celebrated as one of the best lines in the movie. After the film, the line was parodied in several memes. For example, Tumblr user bobbulb posted an Expanding Brain edit of the scene the day the film was released, gaining over 14,000 notes (shown below, left). On May 13th, 2018, Redditor Samhunt909 posted a 13 Reasons Why poster parody of the line to /r/marvelstudios, gaining over 1,100 points (shown below, right).
Another common strand of jokes regarding the line paired it with the snowclone "They always ask 'Why is Gamora?' and not '_How_ is Gamora?" For example, a post to /r/MemesCU with the joke posted May 1st, 2018 gained 87 points (shown below, left). A since-deleted post to /r/Marvelstudios also made the joke and was reposted elsewhere online (shown below, right).
