"Who Can't Finish" Chip Clip TikTok Trend

"Who Can't Finish" Chip Clip TikToks, or Who Invited This Kid?, refers to a series of TikTok skits featuring a variation of the snowclone phrase "who tf can't finish X" in which a chip clip or bag clip is shown attached to something comical that someone "couldn't finish," as if it's being used to reseal a bag of food and keep it fresh. The clamp is usually attached to something other than food. The trend began in late May 2021 on TikTok, becoming popularized in June.

Origin

On January 10th, 2021, TikToker^[1] @twxt.vfx posted a video showing a text string with an original sound consisting of a number of men exclaiming, "Oh my god, bro," "Oh hell no, man, what the fuck, man?" followed by a high-pitched voice saying, "who invited this kid?" and ending with two voices in unison saying, "Get your ass home, boy." It is unknown where the audio comes from.

On May 28th, TikToker^[2] @1finn7 posted a video set to the sound in which he opens the cupboard and sees a clip holding together a Starburst wrapper over the caption, "who tf can't finish a Starburst," as if someone is trying to keep the Starburst fresh (shown below). The video gained over 3.3 million views in just over a week. This is the earliest known video following the trend.

Spread

The trend spread over the course of the month leading into June, resulting in numerous videos where users attach clips to absurd things someone "couldn't finish" along with the phrase. The purposeful lack of context is meant to confuse those outside of the joke.

On June 2nd, TikTokers^[3][4] @mattqew and @gilf_detector posted videos following the trend, garnering over 5.7 million and 4.8 million views respectively in five days (shown below, left and right). As of June 7th, these are the two most popular videos following the trend set to the relevant sound.

The trend continued over the start of June, resulting in over 21,000 videos using the original sound as of June 7th.
