Who Are You Laughing At refers to a viral public freakout video of a woman yelling at someone in their car, telling them not to laugh at her. The video was remixed in February 2021, inspiring a popular trend on TikTok. Thwomp Girl or IRL Thwomp refers to a TikToker who used the sound for a lip-dub video and was subsequently mocked online for the shape of her head and facial features as people compared her to a Thwomp from the Super Mario Bros. series of video games.

Who Are You Laughing At

On January 15th, 2021, TikToker[1] @louim69 posted a video of a woman yelling at him as he sits in his car, saying "Who are you laughing at? Who are you laughing at? Don't fucking laugh at me! You've just near crashed into me." The video gained over 15.8 million views in seven months, although the sound was removed. It was re-uploaded to YouTube[2] on January 31st, referring to the woman as a Karen in the title, gaining over 145,000 views in a comparable span of time (shown below).

In February, musicians Duke & Jones released a remix of the song, likely to their Instagram page, although the original has been removed. On February 5th, TikToker[3] @imcal posted a video tutorial showing off an original dance to the song, gaining over 4 million views in six months (shown below, left). The original sound became popular on TikTok,[4] and was used in over 4,700 videos in the same span of time, many performing the dance (popular example shown below, right).

On February 8th, 2021, TikToker @tia_hendy posted a li-dub video to the sound, gaining an unknown number of views before being removed by the user. Users quickly began making Stitches to the video in order to mock her appearance. Notably, on the same date, TikToker[5] @m0rr155 posted a Stitch adding an image of a Thwomp enemy from the Super Mario Bros. series to the end, implying that she resembles the character (shown below). The video gained over 4 million views in six months.

On the same day, @tia_hendy responded to a comment on TikTok[6] asking if the hate she receives affects her, to which she says she doesn't care and that everyone is entitled to their opinions (shown below).

On March 13th, Instagram[8] and YouTube[9] memer doggityy posted a Friday Night Funkin' meme titled "Thwomp VS IRL Thwomp" using the video, gaining over 64,000 views on the former and 188,000 views on the latter in five months (shown below). On April 16th, YouTuber[7] Spark's meme collection posted @m0rr155's video, titled "Girl looks like Thwomp from Mario," gaining over a million views in four months.

On July 26th, YouTuber[10] Jolori posted a video editing Tia's face onto a thwomp in Super Mario 64, gaining over 26,000 views in a week (shown below).
