White Woman Scream GIF, also known as Sophia Lillis Scream GIF, refers to a reaction GIF from the trailer for Hideo Kojima's video game OD in which white girl with freckles, actress Sophia Lillis, screams with only her head showing in front of a black background. The GIF trended in memes on Twitter / X in December 2023, often paired with captions that followed the "White People When" phrasal template, making fun of white people and their reactions to seemingly "white" problems. Other captions portrayed a shocking scenario that would cause the overdramatic scream.

Origin

On December 7th, 2023, game developer Hideo Kojima posted a trailer to X^[1] for his upcoming game OD that was premiered at The Game Awards 2023. The trailer gained roughly 162,000 likes on X in four days. The trailer was also shared by the YouTube^[2] channel of KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS on December 7th, gaining 234,000 views in four days.

At the trailer's one minute-mark, actress Sophia Lillis' face is shown in front of a black background where she is staring into the camera. She then screams (shown below).

At around 9:00 p.m. EST on December 7th, 2023, X^[3] user @CherryHaikus__ tweeted a screenshot of a The Game Awards' Discord stream that showed Lillis' face as the preview. @CherryHaikus__'s caption referenced the I'm Not Answering This DM meme and the tweet received over 48,000 likes in four days (shown below, left).

Soon after, on December 7th, 2023, X^[4] user @PokoChokos posted a sped-up GIF of Lillis' scream, captioned, "When I’m midway through the goonsesh and they take away the Hello Neighbor xbox disc," gaining roughly 22,000 likes in four days (shown below, right).

After X^[4] user @PokoChokos' usage of the GIF, others on the platform repurposed the meme template. For instance, on December 8th, 2023, X^[5] user @yeenbruh proclaimed that the GIF was "really good," gaining roughly 20,000 likes in three days (shown below, left).

Later on December 8th, 2023, X^[6] user @GalaxyPeaBrain captioned a slightly slower version of the GIF, "When mom finds the piss drawer," gaining roughly 24,000 likes in three days (shown below, right).

Meme creators began to exploit the GIF going into December 2023, such as X^[7] user @M1das_OW2 on December 10th, 2023, who made a Christmasposting version, gaining roughly 46,000 likes in one day (shown below).
