White Sunscreen Face Mark Zuckerberg refers to an image macro meme featuring a photograph of Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg surfing with white zinc sunscreen visible on his face.
Origin
On July 19th, 2020, the New York Post[1] published several photographs of Mark Zuckerberg surfing in Hawaii. Zuckerberg has white sunscreen caked on his face in the pictures (shown below). The Post writes that Zuckerberg rode a "$12,000 eFoil remote-controlled surfboard."
That day, the newspaper tweeted[2] the photograph and wrote, "Mark Zuckerberg surfboards in Hawaii with way too much sunscreen." The tweet received more than 53,000 likes and 22,000 retweets in less than 24 hours (shown below).

That day, the picture went viral on Twitter. For example, writer Carey O'Donnell tweeted[3] the photograph with the caption "Unreal." The post received more than 55,000 likes and 6,900 retweets within 24 hours (shown below, left). The conservative action group The Lincoln Project[4] compared the picture to the President Donald Trump Tan Face photo. The post received more than 52,000 likes and 7,300 retweets in less than 24 hours (shown below, center). Twitter user @brent_peabody joked, "No one has ever seen Mark Zuckerberg and the ghost from Spirited Away in the same room, just saying." The post received more than 13,000 likes and 3,000 retweets in less than 24 hours (shown below, right).
That day, reporter Emily Miller responded to the New York Post tweet,[11] "Actually as a surfer, that’s what we do, coat our faces in white zinc. Water reflects and out there so long, can’t do regular sunscreen." Some disagreed with her argument, for example, Twitter user @Tygr316 wrote, "Actually, only the kooks wear white zinc. Seasoned surfers wear colored zinc cause it cuts down on being reflective which can add heat to your face, and it's meant to be on the nose and cheeks, not caked on the entire face like he is wearing" (shown below).
