White Family Welcoming You Back to the Table, also known as Look Who Decided to Come Out of Their Room, is an image macro meme featuring a photograph of a large family seated a long dining table and looking at the camera. Online, people use the photograph for jokes about being considered anti-social by one's family told from a first-person perspective.

Origin

On September 3rd, 2013, the website MyFamilyDinnerProject.org[1] posted the photograph. In the blog post, the writer Grace included the photograph of their family (shown below). They wrote, "At the table this year, there was a lot of joking about my status as a family dinner “expert.” I shared a few games with everyone (starting with Rose and Thorn, of course), but I’m about to tarnish my reputation because the truth is, I’ve been stealing ideas from my own family this whole time."

On August 22nd, 2015, an anonymous 4chan [2] user posted the image, with the caption, "Well, look who decided to come out of their dungeon."


Spread

That day, on August 22nd, 2015, Redditor shared a screenshot of the 4chan post on the /r/4chan[2] subreddit. The post received more than 3,300 points (94% upvoted) and 110 comments in less than six years.

Over the next six years, people continued to share the image on 4chan, with captions that feature mock dialogue of what the family is saying to the person approaching the table. For example on December 28th, 2017, an anonymous 4chan[3] user posted the image in the /ic/ board (shown below). They captioned the post, ">Hey! There's the family picaso, finally out of his room! What'd ya paint today Anon!?"


On December 24th, 2020, Instagram [4] user @aborteddreams posted a variation of the meme, with the caption, "It's Mr. I Wish I Was Dead. lol. lmao. How's the depression?" The post received more than 5,000 likes in less than one year (shown below, left).

The following year, on November 26th, 2020, Twitter [5] user @ReagansTweets tweeted, "'aha the socialist finally emerges from its bedroom haha we’re kidding.. come take a seat, honey.'" The tweet received more than 269,000 likes and 20,000 retweets in less than one week (shown below, right).
