Which Scream Is Real? refers to a series of memes and a social game in which users replace the original sound in viral scream videos with goofy ahh sound effects, such as AUGHHH and the Brap Sound Effect. Gaining initial virality in August 2022, the format and trend maintained its presence on TikTok through the fall of 2022.
Origin
On August 6th, 2022, TikToker[1] @xxjknxx posted the viral clip of YouTubers KSI and Deji screaming, with the original sound replaced with other several screams from viral videos. The TikTok offered the viewers to guess the original scream and garnered over 605,000 views and 83,600 likes in three months (shown below).
Spread
In the following weeks, TikTokers @xxjknxx and @moimendiga posted multiple viral scream videos in which the original sound was replaced with goofy ahh sound effects. For example, on August 7th, 2022, @xxjknxx uploaded[2] an edited video of Cristiano Ronaldo screaming "siu" ("yes") that received over 610,000 views and 79,000 likes in three months (shown below, left). On August 21st, @moimendiga posted[3] an edited scene of Gus Fring's death from Breaking Bad that received over 1.3 million views and 134,000 likes in the same period (shown below, right).
The format maintained its presence on TikTok through the fall of 2022 as multiple users posted similar edits of viral scream videos, with the format also spreading to YouTube Shorts.
