About

Which Is the Best Seat? is a viral debate about what seat on a New York City subway train is best. Following the spread of the original tweet in January, the tweet's caption, "All my New Yorkers, which is the best seat," has been used as a phrasal template for parodies and other subjects for debate (similar to Where Y'all Sitting).

Origin

On December 31st, 2019, Twitter[1] user @gplatinum_ posted a photograph of a subway train with numerals on each seat. They captioned the post, "All my New Yorkers, which is the best seat?" The tweet received more than 14,000 likes and 1,700 retweets in less than three days (shown below).

Spread

The following day, late-night talkshow host Desus Nice shared the tweet[2] and the caption, "90% of videos that show subway fights involve seat 4." Within 24 hours, the tweet received more than 34,000 likes and 3,400 retweets in less than 24 hours (shown below, left).

That day, others began sharing variations of the debate. Twitter[3] user @thisdiegolopez tweeted a Subway sandwich restaurant with the caption, "All my sandwich eaters, which is the best seat at subway?" The tweet received more than 3,000 likes and 140 retweets in less than 24 hours (shown below, center).

The following day, Twitter[4] user former New York City mayor and 2020 presidential candidate tweeted a photograph of himself standing on the train and the caption, "I always stand." The tweet received more than 1,900 likes and 190 retweets in less than 24 hours (shown below, right).

On January 2nd, Twitter[5] published an Events page on the debate.
