About

Which Is Gayer? or What Is Gayer? refers to a side-by-side comparison exploitable meme format asking which of two variable presented options is "gayer." The option on the left is usually a version of the phrase "being LGBT" or "being gay" while the right option is something arguably gay in either the literal, ironic or pejorative sense of the term. The meme was first posted in February 2020, spreading in the following months into 2021.

Origin

On February 19th, 2020, iFunny[1] user Zeromelon posted a meme presenting the question "WHAT IS GAYER?" offering the options "Literally being gay" along with an image of two female anime characters kissing and "Thinking an Anime character is better that the other just because he's more powerful haha fucking idiots" (shown below). This is the earliest known instance of the meme.

Spread

On February 26th, 2020, Instagram[2] user @vaporman.wave posted a photoshopped version of the meme replacing the image to the right with an image of an Xbox One and a PlayStation 4, and the text with "arguing over which console is better in 2020," making fun of those who participate in console wars, gaining over 2,300 likes in one and a half years (shown below).

On January 31st, 2021, Redditor u/Lord_Onion_Star posted a Beastars meme to /r/beastars[3] using the format, gaining over 2,200 upvotes in eight months (shown below, left). On May 24th, Instagram[4] user mentallylgbtq posted a version of the meme by Instagram user @thats.a.lotta.gays, gaining over 58,000 likes in four months (shown below, right).
