The trend started in early June 2025, featuring users dramatically failing or misinterpreting their tasks.

Origin

On June 7th, 2025, TikTok[1] user @iheartnhlanhla posted the earliest known video of the "lied about IT qualifications" trend, in which he added the overlay text "When you lied about your IT qualifications and now they tell you to use POWERPOINT" while he made pointing gestures towards his computer. The video (seen below) amassed over 11 million plays and 1.9 million likes in two weeks.

The "lied about qualifications" trend quickly spawned several comedic skit videos on TikTok in the following weeks, in which users from different work backgrounds posted content ironically misinterpreting a task given after lying on their resume.

For instance, on June 9th, 2025, TikTok[2] user @hisstorymade posted a video with the overlay text, "you lied about having computer skills and now they ask you to use your Outlook." The video (seen below) received more than 11 million plays and 2.3 million likes in two weeks.

On the same day, TikTok[3] user @kb_hale0 posted a comedic skit video of her using paper notes to "run some texts" after lying about being a doctor. The video (seen below) received roughly 7 million plays and 1.6 million likes in two weeks.
