What's Your Degree In, also known as What's Your Major, refers to a series of mock conversations on Twitter, in which participants share sarcastic and/or ironic responses to questions about their college education. These conversations typically end with a subversion of the subject in question.
Origin
On February 23rd, 2010, Twitter[1] user @charleskaplan posted the earliest known version of the format. They wrote, "girl: 'whats your major' me: 'management' girl: 'oh, thats the major of all the asians ive met'" (shown below).
Spread
In 2017, the format grew in popularity. On July 24th, Twitter[2] user @hannahleidazle posted about ironic conversations they have in regards to being a dance major (shown below, left). On November 27th, 2017, Twitter[3] user @slbeckerr12 retweeted and since-removed tweet and added a joke about being a nursing major. The post received more than 7,000 retweets and 15,000 likes in two years (shown below, center). The following month, Twitter[4] user @jake_bradbury15 tweeted a joke about being a business major. The post received more than1,700 retweets and 4,500 likes in less than two years (shown below, right).
In March 2019, retweets of @jake_bradbury15's tweet helped revive the format.[5] On March 21st, 2019, Twitter[6] user @KenzieHank tweeted a joke about being an education major. The tweet received more than 3,000 retweets and 8,700 likes in less than two weeks (shown below).
