Whatever The Lyrics Said is a phrasal template used to tweet misheard or parodied lyrics ending with "or whatever (musical artist) said."
Origin
On May 16th, Twitter user @SoBreezyGMT[1] tweeted, "if at first you donβt succeed, dust yourself off & try his friend π₯³ or whatever Aaliyah said" (shown below). The original Aaliyah lyrics are, "if at first you don't succeed, dust yourself off and try again." The parody gained over 600 likes in 12 days.
Spread
On May 23rd, 2019 many Twitter users began using the phrasal template. Twitter user @KhadiDon[2] parodied Alicia Keys lyrics in a tweet which gained over 8,400 likes in five days (shown below, left). The next day @DizzyDeszz[3] parodied Nelly's song "Ride With Me" by tweeting "If you wanna go and take a ride wit me then you better have some mf GAS MONEEEEYY or whatever Nelly said ππ" (shown below, right). The tweet accumulated over 1,400 likes in four days.
A Frank Ocean lyric parody tweeted by @TheresaAnnDix[4] garnered over 1,800 tweets in four days (shown below, left). Some other Twitter users used the template to parody lines from shows and movies. Twitter user @charl0ttepineda[5] tweeted, "Get in loser we are fighting racists or whatever Regina George said" referring to a line in Mean Girls (shown below, right). The tweet garnered over 1,200 likes in four days.
