What Sort of Pics Usually Get Sent at 3am? refers to a series of exploitable text message conversations. In the format, one member of the conversation requests sexual explicit photographs, and the other member sends a non sequitur picture for humorous effect.

Origin

The earliest known usage of the format was published on July 2nd, 2018 by the Twitter [1] account @RedPandasDaily. The post features the conversation format with a picture of a red panda bear in response to the question "What sort of pics usually get sent at 3am? ;]" With 24 hours, the post (shown below) received more than 500 retweets and 1,700 likes.

Spread

Hours later, Redditor [2] Survivorman98 published a variation of the format with a large, round seal replacing the panda in the /r/MemeEconomy subreddit. The post (shown below, left) received more than 150 points (94% upvoted) and 65 comments in 24 hours.

The image was shared numerous times on Reddit. Another post on /r/MemeEconomy by Reddiot RocksHaveFeelings2[3] received more than 18,000 points (92% upvoted) and 1,000 comments in less than 24 hours. When posted to the /r/me_irl [4] subreddit the following day, the post received more than 25,000 points (95% upvoted) and 125 comments in less than 24 hours.

Shortly after, the format was posted to /r/dankmemes. On July 3rd, Redditor[5] Derparama posted a variation in which the panda is replaced by a boy in a large suit. The post (shown below) received more than 4,500 points (98% upvoted) and 70 comments in less than 24 hours.

The image was also posted in the /r/YouSeeComrade subreddit by Redditor Diet-Racist.[6] The post (shown below, right) received more than 5,600 points (92% upvoted) and 30 comments in less than 12 hours.
