What Prompt Did You Use? is a catchphrase most often used to troll artists when they post a piece of artwork online, suggesting that the artwork is AI-generated and asking what prompt they used to generate it. Memes about the use of the phrase have been posted online as early as September 2022.

Origin

On September 19th, 2022, X[1] user @alexriesart posted a Batman slapping Robin meme in which Robin asks, "What prompt did you u-" and Batman answers, "ROUND BRUSH!!!" garnering over 1,300 likes in two years (shown below). This is the earliest known meme to reference the phrase.


Spread

On April 14th, 2023, X[2] user @EightyFourArt posted a drawing of Ashley from the Resident Evil 4 Remake, garnering over 24,000 likes in a year. On April 15th, X[3] user @jorthead commented, "Woah, what prompt did you use?" The artist responded,[4] "I thought of Ashley then I drew her," garnering over 25,000 likes in a year. The comment was screenshotted and reposted by X[5] user @3lsyee that day, garnering over 54,000 likes in the same span of time (shown below).

On December 22nd, 2023, X[6] user @AbstractPurple posted a meme featuring the phrase, garnering over 56,000 likes in seven months (shown below, left). On July 18th, X[7] user @ShitpostGate posted a meme using the phrase that gained over 3,900 likes in under a day (shown below, right).
