Origin

On August 22nd, 2014, the first episode of BoJack Horseman animated series premiered on Netflix [1]. In two separate scenes in the episode, character Mr. Peanutbutter comments "Is this a crossover episode?" upon meeting titular character BoJack Horsemen. The phrase would later become a running gag, appearing in several episodes of the series[2].

In 2017, several macros from the show captioned with the quote began seeing use in memes about unlikely collaborations. On May 12, 2017, Redditor[3][4] mexicanjesuschrist posted the earliest known meme containing the macro which to /r/dankmemes subreddit. The post received over 1,200 upvotes before being taken down by the moderators. On May 14, 2017, Redditor[5] VictorZ0216 used the macro in another post to /r/dankmemes (shown below). The post gained over 2,900 upvotes in six months.



The format gained moderate popularity on Reddit, with noteworthy examples appearing on /r/dankmemes[6] and /r/BoJackHorseman[7] subreddits through 2017 and 2018. Additionally, other macros featuring Mr. Peanutbutter captioned with the same quote have been circulated along with the original one.
