What Do These Colors Remind You Of? refers to a social media trend that involves posting a group of two or more simple colors with that question. The trend gained virality on X / Twitter in 2023, with posts often set up for a specific answer that references a certain meme, character or group of characters.

Origin

On June 7th, 2021, X^[1] / Twitter user @Reecee_yt posted images of colors red, green, blue and yellow with the question "What do these colors remind you of?" The tweet, which is the earliest found notable post of the kind, (shown below) garnered over 1,300 replies, 830 reposts and 2,700 likes in three years.

Spread

On June 25th, 2023, X^[2] user @pa_ze2 made a similar post that asked the same question about a combination of dark yellow and black. The post (shown below, left) received over 4,900 replies, 1,300 reposts and 4,300 likes in one year. On July 7th, X^[3] user @hembssssss posted the earliest viral meme within the trend, a question about light blue and orange. The post (shown below, right) gained over 5,400 reposts and quote posts and 4,100 likes.

The post was followed by multiple viral replies. For example, on July 8th, 2023, X^[4] user @SpixieDust5 made a reply referencing the My Bitch Wife meme, which received over 8,300 reposts and 75,000 likes in one year (shown below, left). On July 9th, X^[5] user @SouthpauzArt replied with a Perry the Platypus edit that gained over 3,400 reposts and 26,000 likes in the same period (shown below, right).

More notable posts within the trend were posted on X^[7] / Twitter in 2023 and 2024. For example, on April 6th, 2024, X^[6] user @steekceo posted four colors corresponding to the Kahoot! palette, with the post gaining over 11,000 replies, 8,900 reposts and quote posts, and 48,000 likes in three months.

On June 30th, 2024, X^[8] user @hembssssss posted images of colors orange and purple with the question. In nine days, the post gained over 16,000 replies, 11,000 reposts and quote posts, and 61,000 likes (post shown below, left; example reply shown below, right).

The post triggered a surge in popularity of the format in early July 2024.
