What Did You Just Put In Your Pocket? refers to a clip from the comedian Sam Hyde's POV sketch Guilt Simulator in which he insistently inquires if the viewer has something in his pocket. Starting in March 2022, the sketch gained popularity as a video caption format online, also gaining popularity in lip syncs on TikTok.

Origin

Prior to March 17th, 2022, Sam Hyde's comedy sketch Guilt Simulator premiered. In the sketch, Hyde accuses the viewer of various things such as stealing from him and messing with his personal belongings (full sketch shown below, left). On March 20th, YouTube^[1] user Fez Hat uploaded a preview of the sketch in which Sam Hyde insistently asks the viewer to show him the contents of their pockets. The preview (shown below, right) gained over 75,000 views in six months.

On March 17th, 2022, iFunny^[2] user kurby71gkq3964 posted a video caption based on the clip, captioning it, "Sam Hyde interrogating you about the contents of your pockets," which gained over 150 smiles in six months. On March 18th, Twitter^[3] user @tulpapilled posted a video caption meme that gained over 79,900 views, 1,200 retweets and 7,900 likes in the same period (shown below).

The post received viral spread online as it was reposted on iFunny,^[4] Twitter^[5] and other websites in the following days. In mid-March 2022, the video caption format gained populartity on iFunny: for example, March 19th and March 21st posts by iFunny^[6][7] users Bungism and hudzin_ gained over 110 smiles and 140 smiles in six months, respectively (shown below, left and center). On March 20th, YouTube^[8] user Aljaž Jug posted a meme that accumulated over 759,000 views in that period (shown below, right).

On March 21st, 2022, TikTok^[9] user @thecuckking uploaded the clip to the app, where it received over 233,000 views and 25,000 likes, and was used in memes. For example, on March 28th, TikToker @bofem posted a video using the soundbite that received over 1.4 million views and 287,000 likes in five months (shown below, left).

In mid-July 2022, the clip regained popularity on TikTok, this time being used in lip sync comedy videos. For example, on July 20th TikToker^[10] 42069horndog posted a video that received over 1.4 million views and 326,000 likes in one month (shown below, right).

The video saw continued use online as source material for video captions in August 2022.
