About
Werewolves, are mythical creatures said to be humans with the ability to transform into wolves under the presence of a full moon
Origin
The idea of Werewolves is thought to have originated in Ancient Greek Literature and Mythology. For example, Herodotus[1], in his Histories[2], wrote that the Neuri, a tribe located in the north-east of Scythia, were all transformed into wolves once every year for several days, before changing back to their human shape. Another example would be Pausanias'[3] story of Lycaon[4], who was transformed into a wolf because he had ritually murdered a child.
Spread
The idea of Werewolves spread considerably through the work of fiction, with many different horror stories and films using werewolves as a basis. One of the famous early examples would be the 1897 novel "Dracula"[5], referencing earlier mythologies of werewolves and similar legendary demons. The first feature film to use a werewolf was "Werewolf of London"[6] in 1935. The main werewolf featured in the film is a London scientist who still maintains most of his human features even after transformations. Since then, many different examples have been created, using the idea of werewolves
