About
We're DINKs refers to a series of viral videos that are part of a TikTok trend in which couples who identify as a DINK couple (a slang acronym for the phrase "Dual Income No Kids") state the benefits and side effects of being DINKs. The trend started in late 2023 and eventually gained criticism on websites like Twitter / X, predominantly inspired by a video posted by TikToker @lillyanne_.
Origin
The trend started on November 27th, 2023, when TikToker[1] @engelthang posted a video of her and her husband saying "We're DINKs" and then listing a benefit or side effect of identifying as a DINK couple. Over one week, the video gained roughly 852,100 plays and 95,600 likes (shown below).
Spread
After their video went viral, others on TikTok replicated the format, such as TikToker[2] @johnefinance on December 3rd, 2023, whose video made with his wife gained roughly 775,700 plays and 85,500 likes in a day (shown below, left). Also on December 3rd, TikToker[3] @lillyanne_ posted a similar video with her husband, gaining roughly 2.3 million plays and 135,000 likes in one day (shown below, right).
Later on December 3rd, 2023, X[4] user @offtheraiIs reposted TikToker[3] @lillyanne_'s video, captioning it, "You’re both genetic dead ends congrats," gaining roughly 3.7 million views and 7,800 likes in less than a day (shown below).
The tweet gained numerous viral replies and quotes going into the next day as many stated their opinions on DINK culture embodied by the video. For instance, on December 4th, X[5] user @magdajtaylor stated, "hard not to notice how nearly every single feature they mention here relates strictly to consumption," gaining roughly 3,800 likes in less than a day (shown below, left).
Also on December 4th, 2023, X[6] user @PaulSkallas (aka LindyMan) quoted the post, namedropping Homer's Odyssey, gaining roughly 2,700 likes in less than a day (shown below, right).
