Welcome To The Mato refers to a viral song by the Brazilian singer Marco Brasil Filho and Dj Kevin. The song was released in July 2021 but was popularized on TikTok around April 2023, being used as a soundtrack for comedy skit content and ironic memes about people who live in the countryside of Brazil.
Origin
On July 2nd, 2021, the Brazilian country singer uploaded a music video titled "Welcome To The Mato" featuring Dj Kevin on his official YouTube[1] channel. The song describes the lifestyle of someone that lives in the countryside region of Brazil and garnered 9 million views and 174,000 likes in two years. (seen below)
Spread
On July 5th, 2021, a part of the music was posted (seen below, left) on TikTok[2] by @asparatudo, which garnered 446,000 plays, 28,300 likes and amassed 43,500 other videos uploaded on the platform using the sound. On April 17th, 2023, TikToker[3] @mrxze.edits posted a parody video of the song using a scene from the kids' cartoon The Backyardigans. The post (seen below, right) garnered 10 million plays and 1.5 million likes in a month.
A few days after the parody video was uploaded on TikTok,[4] user @gabischlesinger created a dance trend inspired by the song with some friends. The video (seen below, left), uploaded on April 20th, 2023, garnered 6.5 million plays and 636,000 likes in a month. On April 23rd, TikTok[5] creator @isadora_.nunes posted a video doing the dance trend (seen below, right), which received 6.3 million plays and 609,000 likes in a month.
