About

Welcome to My Twisted Mind is a popular title given to blogs by teenagers who believe they post edgy content. The ubiquity of the phrase made it a subject of parody on blogging platforms, particularly Tumblr, who associate the phrase with cringeworthy attempts at edginess.

Origin

The phrase was first used in earnest by teenagers who believed they were posting dark or edgy content (example blog[1] shown below).

On February 24th, 2014, Tumblr[5] user stillhereunfortunately posted a screenshot of a Google search result showing a number of Tumblr blogs with names that are variations on Welcome to My Twisted Mind. The post received more than 25,000 notes in less than seven years (shown below).

Spread

Tumblr meme-documenting blog Meme Archives[2] traces the origin of the phrase as a meme to a post by Tumblr user herimperialnootness, who posted "Proud member of the “I never titled my blog with welcome to my twisted mind” club" on October 22nd, 2014. The post was later reblogged by user sinisterstiel with examples of blogs featuring the name (shown below). It has over 283,000 notes as of August 28th, 2017.

On July 25th, 2015, Urban Dictionary user Babe420[3] submitted a definition to the site (shown below).

Meanwhile, the phrase began to pick up steam as a meme and snowclone on Tumblr mocking teens attempting to be edgy. On April 1st, 2015, user leelinschlin[4] posted a text post that read "Welcome to my twisted bra strap," gaining over 75,000 notes (shown below, left). On August 20th, 2015, Tumblr user future-ghost mocked Banksy's "Dismaland" concept with the phrase, gaining over 12,000 notes (shown below, right). Image macros featuring the phrase grew popular as well.
